If you are researching apps and programs to help you learn a new language, you’ve likely been overwhelmed by all of the different options. Some programs are completely free, while others cost more than your monthly cell phone bill. Rocket Languages is one of the popular options you’ve likely come across, and it’s not necessarily always cheap. In this article, we discuss whether Rocket Languages offers a free plan, what their free trial includes, and some potential tricks to get a large discount on one of the paid packages.

In the video above, team member John breaks down everything you need to know about scoring a deal on courses from Rocket Languages.

Is Rocket Languages Free To Use?

The answer to the question of whether Rocket is free is—it depends. If you are looking for the technical answer, then yes, Rocket Languages is free to use. You can technically gain access to their lessons for free, albeit in a limited fashion.

In short, Rocket Languages will give you a taste of what they have to offer; however, if you want full access, you have to sign up for one of their paid plans.

Therefore, in reality, the answer to the above question is no. Rocket Languages is not free to use. Luckily, as you will find out below, the paid plans from Rocket Languages are actually pretty reasonable despite the sticker shock you might have when first viewing their paid options. You will rarely (if ever) pay full price.

Does Rocket Languages Offer A Free Trial?

Yes, Rocket Languages does offer a free trial. In fact, the free trial is what I was alluding to above.

Now, what’s nice about Rocket Languages is that their free trial is different from many other language learning companies. For example, with the free trial from Pimsleur, you have to select one of their paid plans, and enter your credit card information because you will be charged if you don’t cancel before their free trial expires.

With Rocket Languages though, you don’t have to enter your credit card information and set a reminder to cancel before the free trial ends. It doesn’t work like that. The only thing you have to do is enter your name and email, and you’ll get instant access to several different lessons across multiple Rocket levels, regardless of whether you want to learn Italian, Spanish, or French.

That way you can see how the Rocket Languages app functions, what their lessons are like from beginner to advanced, and whether their learning framework will work for you.

Also, to be clear, the Rocket Languages free trial does not expire. You essentially have access to sample lessons for as long as you’d like.

Why Is Rocket Languages Not Free?

There are several reasons the courses from Rocket Languages are not free.

First, the courses from Rocket Languages are free from ads. With other language learning companies (e.g. Duolingo and Busuu), they are able to offer free plans for users because the content is disrupted by advertisements. That is how these companies make money.

And while there is nothing wrong with that approach, Rocket Languages just does things a little differently. They charge for their courses so that they don’t have to rely on selling advertisements.

As a result, the learning experience with Rocket is more effective as you’re not constantly getting disrupted by annoying ads.

Next, the Rocket courses are more comprehensive than most other programs (including Duolingo, Rosetta Stone, and Mondly). This isn’t a simple flashcard app. The Rocket courses include interactive audio lessons with fluent speakers, speech recognition technology, and detailed grammar notes.

In other words, it costs money to create well-rounded and effective language learning courses that aren’t AI-generated (see Duolingo), and Rocket Languages needs to make a profit.

Lastly, Rocket Languages does not sell your data. For reference, some other companies will sell your data as an alternative means of generating revenue.

Is The Rocket Languages App Free?

Yes, the Rocket Languages mobile app is completely free to download for iOS and Android devices. In fact, last I checked the app had a 4.4 rating with over 800 reviews.

However, keep in mind, while the app is free to download, that doesn’t mean the content is totally free. Again, you can sign up for a free trial, but after you complete the free lessons, you’ll have to purchase one of the company’s paid packages for complete access.

Therefore, while the app itself is free, the language content within the app is not.

Rocket Languages Free vs Paid

Many people often ask what the exact difference is between the free trial from Rocket Languages and one of their paid plans.

Well, the free trial includes lessons from each level of the Rocket Languages course you select. For example, if you selected the Rocket Spanish course, you get one free audio lesson, one free language & culture lesson, and one free survival kit lesson per level.

Level 1 is for beginners, Level 2 is for intermediate learners, and Level 3 (you guessed it) is for advanced learners. That way you can get a feel for how the course progresses from beginner to advanced.

For the record, the audio lesson and language & culture lessons are the backbone of the Rocket courses. The audio lessons feature native speakers to help improve your listening and verbal skills, while the language & culture lessons cover grammar and cultural insights.

Then of course, once you sign up for a paid plan, you will get unlimited access to all lessons and modules within each level. Thus, the key difference between the free and paid plans is the amount of lessons you get access to.

How To Get Rocket Languages For Free

We have purchased, used and reviewed several different language courses from Rocket at this point. As such, we are very familiar with how their program works and their pricing model. So with that in mind, let’s discuss two hacks to potentially get Rocket Languages for free.

First, Rocket Languages offers special licenses for schools and non-profits. If you are in high school or college, or you are somehow affiliated with a non-profit organization, you may want to check to see if you can get access to one of Rocket’s courses for free. We are not sure how many schools or organizations the company works with (we’re not privy to that information), but it’s definitely worth inquiring about.

Next, many consumers are also unaware that Rocket offers a 60-day money back guarantee. Thus, if you simply want to learn some useful words and phrases for your upcoming trip Germany or Japan, then you may want to go ahead and sign up for a paid plan, complete lessons everyday for the next two months leading up to your trip, and then cancel and get your money back. That is one way to essentially get access to Rocket’s full course for free.
