In the video above, John from the TPI team covers everything you need to know regarding Babbel pricing and their different subscription options. For more detail, be sure to continue reading our full, written article below.

Does Babbel Cost Money?

The short answer is yes, Babbel does cost money. Unlike other language apps, such as Duolingo and Memrise, the Babbel language courses are not free.

To be clear, you can sign up for a Babbel account for free, and that does include a free lesson for each language; however, their is no true free version of the Babbel app. Babbel offers courses for 14 different languages, so that means you can essentially get 14 free lessons if that is what you’re aiming for, but I doubt it.

There is no Duolingo-style free version here. Once you complete the free lesson, you’ll be prompted to sign up for one Babbel’s paid subscription plans. It is what it is. The free lesson simply exists to give you a taste of Babbel’s lesson style.

With all that being said, the paid Babbel plans are still fairly reasonable in my opinion. Purchasing one of their subscription plans will not drain your wallet like some other apps. If you are on a budget, in my experience using all of these different apps, Babbel is an excellent choice.

What Does Babbel Cost?

Babbel offers customers four different subscription options to choose from, giving you the chance to select the plan that best fits your timeline and goals.

For example, if you simply want to learn a few key words and phrases for your upcoming trip to Munich or Venice, then the company’s month-to-month plan will likely be a good fit. However, if you’re moving to Paris and need to become fully fluent in French, the 12-month plan is likely a better fit.

In any event, let’s break down Babbel’s full retail pricing:

  • 1-month Plan = $15
  • 3-month Plan = $45
  • 6-month Plan = $90
  • 12-month Plan = $180

In short, as far as full MSRP goes, regardless of which subscription option you select, you’re looking at around $15 per month with Babbel.

However, with all of that said, you will not end up paying $15 per month for access to Babbel’s language courses. I promise. Babbel regularly offers sales and special promotions, and you should never have to pay that full $15/month.

In most cases, you can expect to receive anywhere from 15% to 55% off your subscription. Below is a snippet of what you’ll most likely pay come after discounts and coupon codes.

  • 1-month Plan = $15
  • 3-month Plan = $38
  • 6-month Plan = $63
  • 12-month Plan = $80

Thus, in reality, the true cost of Babbel is somewhere between $7 to $15 per month, depending on which subscription option you select and current sale levels. That is what you should expect to pay come checkout.

Also, it’s important to note here that these subscription options include access to only one Babbel language. That means you can’t switch back and forth between several languages.

Once you select the language you want to learn, if you change your mind down the road, you would have to pay again for the different course—unless you purchase the Babbel lifetime subscription, as discussed more fully below.

Babbel Lifetime Subscription Cost

In addition to the four subscription options, Babbel also offers customers a lifetime plan. Unlike the company’s monthly plans, which include access to only one language for a set amount of time, the lifetime plan includes access to all 14 Babbel languages for life.

This is a great option for people who want to learn multiple languages over a set period of time.

The Babbel lifetime subscription costs $600 full retail, however, like the company’s monthly subscriptions, you can often find this package on sale. In most cases, expect to pay around $200 to $300 for Babbel’s lifetime plan.

How Much Does Babbel Live Cost?

Babbel Live is different from the company’s standard language courses. It includes unlimited small group, live online classes with certified language tutors for Spanish, French, Italian, and German.

To be clear, if you sign up for Babbel Live, it also includes access to the company’s standard language course as well. For example, if you sign up for Babbel Live Spanish, you not only get access to unlimited live Spanish classes, but you also get access to the company’s standard Spanish program.

Similar to the company’s other offerings, Babbel offers four different subscription options for their Live packages:

  • 1-month Plan = $99
  • 3-month Plan = $297
  • 6-month Plan = $594
  • 12-month Plan = $1,188

Again, this is just full retail pricing. As you might guess by this point, Babbel offers sales and discounts for their Live packages as well.

Expect to save around 30% to 50% in total, bringing down the true cost for Babbel Live to $50 to $99/month, depending on which option you choose.

Babbel Price vs Other Language Apps

Now that you have an idea of what Babbel truly costs, you might be wondering how that stacks up against others in the language learning industry. After all, there are dozens of language learning apps to choose from these days.

Well, the answer is that Babbel lands near the more affordable end of the spectrum.

Unfortunately, the company does not offer free plans like Duolingo or Memrise, but their plans are certainly more affordable than the likes of Pimsleur, Rocket, Fluenz, and Michel Thomas, for example.

Honestly, at $7 to $15 per month, our team thinks that Babbel is a great bargain. Their pricing is pretty much on par with Rosetta Stone and Busuu Premium, however, we believe Babbel offers the more effective language program as compared to those two options. We give them higher grades in all categories.

Plus, Babbel’s language lessons are also kind of fun. We think Babbel is a solid value, especially for busy individuals looking for short, engaging lessons.
