Detailed guide covering Babbel pricing, and whether their subscription plans are a good value
If you want to learn a new language, it can be difficult deciding which app or program to use. The choices vary widely, from totally free apps to expensive, personalized tutoring. In this article, we cover everything you need to know about the different subscription options for Babbel, one of the most popular language learning options on the market. We discuss how much their app costs in 2026 and how their prices compare to others in the industry like Duolingo, Pimsleur, and Rosetta Stone.
In the video above, John from the TPI team covers everything you need to know regarding Babbel pricing and their different subscription options. For more detail, be sure to continue reading our full, written article below.
Does Babbel Cost Money?
The short answer is yes, Babbel does cost money. Unlike some competitors, such as Duolingo and Memrise, the Babbel language courses are not free.
To be clear, you can sign up for a Babbel account for free, and that does include a free lesson for each language; however, there is no true free version of the Babbel app. They offer courses for 14 different languages, so that means you can essentially get 14 free lessons if that is what you’re aiming for, but I doubt it.
There is no Duolingo-style free version here. Once you complete the free lesson, you’ll be prompted to sign up for one of their paid subscription plans. The free lesson simply exists to give you a taste of Babbel’s lesson style.

With all that being said, the paid Babbel plans are still fairly reasonable in my opinion. Purchasing one of their subscription plans will not drain your wallet like some other apps. If you are on a budget, in my experience using all of these different apps, Babbel is an excellent choice.
What Does Babbel Cost in 2026?
They offer customers four different subscription options to choose from, giving you the chance to select the plan that best fits your timeline and goals.
For example, if you simply want to pick up a few key words and phrases for your upcoming trip to Munich or Venice, then the company’s month-to-month plan will likely be a good fit. However, if you’re moving to Paris and need to become fully fluent in French, the 12-month plan is likely a better fit.
In any event, let’s break down their full retail pricing (MSRP):
3-month Plan = $54
6-month Plan = $108
12-month Plan = $215
In short, as far as full MSRP goes, regardless of which option you select, you’re looking at around $18 per month.
However, with all of that said, you will not end up paying $18 per month for access to Babbel’s language courses. I promise. They regularly offer sales and special promotions, and you should never have to pay that full $18/month.

In most cases, you can expect to receive anywhere from 15% to 55% off your subscription. Below is a snippet of what you’ll most likely pay after discounts and coupon codes.
3-month Plan = $45
6-month Plan = $75
12-month Plan = $100
Thus, in reality, the true price is somewhere between $8 to $15 per month, depending on which plan you select and current sale levels. That is what you should expect to pay come checkout.
Also, it’s important to note here that these options include access to only one Babbel language. That means you can’t switch back and forth between several languages.
Once you select the language you want to study, if you change your mind down the road, you would have to pay again for the different course – unless you purchase the Babbel lifetime subscription, as discussed more fully below.
Babbel Lifetime Subscription Cost
They also offer a lifetime plan. Unlike the company’s monthly plans, which include access to only one language for a set amount of time, the lifetime plan includes access to all 14 Babbel languagesfor life.
The Babbel lifetime package runs around $646 full retail. However, like the company’s monthly plans, you can often find this package on sale for as low as $200.
Should You Get Babbel’s Lifetime Plan?
If you’re serious about achieving intermediate or advanced levels of fluency, their lifetime plan may actually work out cheaper. You pay once and unlock access to all languages forever. That’s a solid deal compared to monthly plans if you plan to study for more than a year or want to master more than one language.
What Do You Get with the Free Version of Babbel?
They do offer a limited free experience, but it’s mainly designed to let you preview the format. You get access to the first lesson in each course, but core content like grammar, review drills and speaking exercises are locked behind a paywall.
Babbel Price vs Other Language Apps
Now, you might be wondering how that stacks up against others in the industry. After all, there are dozens of language learning apps to choose from these days.
Well, the answer is that they land near the more affordable end of the spectrum.
Unfortunately, the company does not offer free plans like Duolingo or Memrise, but their plans are certainly more affordable than the likes of Pimsleur, Rocket, Fluenz, and Michel Thomas, for example. While Duolingo is free, Babbel’s structured courses include grammar, conversation and real-life phrases that help you make faster progress. For around $8 to $15 per month (with discounts), Babbel may offer better long-term value, especially if you want real progress in speaking and understanding.
Honestly, at $8 to $15 per month, our team thinks that Babbel is a great bargain. Their pricing is pretty much on par with Rosetta Stone and Busuu Premium; however, we believe Babbel offers the more effective language program as compared to those two options. We give them higher grades in all categories.
Plus, Babbel’s language lessons are also kind of fun. We think Babbel is a solid value, especially for busy individuals looking for short, engaging lessons.
